How to convert denary to binary
- Write the place values:
128,64,32,16,8,4,2,1. - Start at the left. If the place value fits into the number, put a
1there and subtract it. If it doesn't fit, put a0. - Move right and repeat with what is left, until you reach 0. Any remaining columns are
0.
Example: 178. 128 fits (178 − 128 = 50). 64 doesn't fit. 32 fits (50 − 32 = 18). 16 fits (18 − 16 = 2). 8 and 4 don't fit. 2 fits (2 − 2 = 0). 1 doesn't fit. So 178 is 1011 0010.
Two's complement (A level): for a negative number, put a 1 under −128, then add 128 to your number and make what is left with the other bits. Example: −123 + 128 = 5, which is 4 + 1, so −123 is 1000 0101. Another method: write the positive version in binary, flip every bit, then add 1.
